Crash-testing

Today the High Security market is facing increasing competition from manufacturers of non-crash tested products.
To provide real security, Perimeter Protection Group is crash-testing all High Security products under real conditions.

Evidence of compliance with required crash rating is often given by presenting a (fake) self-certification based on static calculations instead of a valid certification of the crash-testing . Only a real crash test can ultimately prove the resistance to the applied impact load. And thus, ensure compliance as per the required level of security!

Our High Security products are made in Germany under strict quality control and reliably prevent unauthorised or violent vehicle access. All products are certified to the highest level in accordance with British standard PAS 68 (7.5 t at 80 km/h) or American standard ASTM F 2656/ DOS (6.8 t at 80 km/h) or IWA 14-1 (7.2 t at 80 km/h). Some bollard types are also tested at a lower level (K4/M30).

U.S. Standards

In 1985, the U.S. State Department published the certification standard SD-STD-02.01. The test vehicle was specified as a medium-duty truck weighing 6800 kg (15000 lb). The nominal impact velocities were 50 km/h (30 mph), 65 km/h (40 mph) and 80 km/h (50 mph). Penetration was measured from the pre-impact front (attack) face of the VSB and classified into three categories of penetration rating.

In 2003, this standard was revised. Significant changes were the measuring of the penetration from the rear (inside) face of the VSB. Also, the limitation of permissible vehicle penetration to one meter / the highest level of penetration rating.

In 2007, the SD-STD-02.01, Revision A, March 2003 was replaced by the ASTM F2656-07. This new standard included in addition to the medium-duty truck three new types of test vehicle. It was a small passenger car, pickup truck and heavy good vehicle. There were three predetermined impact velocities for each vehicle category. Penetration was measured from the original rear face of the VSB and classified into four categories of penetration rating.

The latest version of the Test Method F2656 was published in 2015. Among various updates it incorporated two additional vehicles. It was the full-size passenger Sedan and the cab over/cab forward class 7 truck. It excluded the lowest penetration rating.

British Standard

In 2005, the ‘PAS 68:2005 Specification for Vehicle Security Barriers: Fixed Bollards’ was published. It provided some synergy with the U.S. State Department test standards. The standard was expanded within two years to include the specific issues relating to other types of vehicle security barriers. It now incorporated e.g. road blockers, drop arm barriers and security gates.

The latest version of the impact test specification PAS 68:2013 rates VSB based on six types of text vehicles. Including up to seven test speeds. Penetration is measured from the rear face of the VSB.

International Standard

In 2013, the IWA 14-1:2013 was published to provide an international consensus-built specification for crash-testing. The aim was to harmonise the performance requirements, vehicle impact test method and performance rating for VSB.

This required the merging of the vehicle impact test specification as per the British Publically Available Specification PAS 68 with the American Standard Test Method ASTM F 2656. The international standard assesses VSB performance based on nine types of text vehicles with up to seven test speeds. Penetration is measured from the front face of the VSB.
